This month we have decided to turn our attention to one of the most popular superfood’s out there, known as Quinoa. Since we started having this product available with us, we have had amazing response from our customers but with that, came a lot of questions as well such as: How do you cook Quinoa? What is the difference between the black, white and red quinoa? What can you serve it with?
So today, we are here to answer all these questions for you.
Firstly what is quinoa?
It is a tiny, bead-shaped whole-grain, with a slightly bitter flavor and firm texture. Unlike wheat or rice, quinoa is a complete protein – containing all eight of the essential amino acids. It has been recognized as a supercrop because of its amazing health benefit. It is rich with dietary fiber, phosphorus, magnesium and iron. It is also gluten-free and easy to digest.
How many varieties are there?
Quinoa comes in three main varieties – white, red and black. Out of the three the white quinoa is the more recognized . Now you may wonder, are they different at all? Well, in terms of their nutritional content – they are all the same. So don’t worry at all. However, the red and black may take a little longer to cook as compared to the white one. But other than that, all the varieties of quinoa produce the same nutty, slightly bitter-tasting grain when cooked, choosing the variety of quinoa often depends on personal preference and availability.
To cook quinoa, there’s a simple ratio 2:1 – boil 2 cups of water with 1 cup of rinsed quinoa. Allow it to simmer for about 15 minutes.
Cover the pot and take it off the heat for five minutes before fluffing the quinoa with a fork. You can serve quinoa hot, cold or at room temperature. You can also use a rice cooker to cook the quinoa.
Storage: Store quinoa in an airtight container in the fridge.
