Ramadan also known as Eid, is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar in which people observe a month of strict fasting. This means that they are not allowed to eat or drink anything, including water white the sun is shining.
Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, improvement and increased worship. It is believed that this period can help individuals practice self-control and cleanse the body and mind. Moreover, it is also a reminder for them to reflect on the poor and suffering, who may have very little to eat or drink.
During Ramadan in the Muslim world, most restaurants are closed during the daylight hours. Most of the families will wake up early to have a meal before the sun rises and the fast is then broken after the sun sets which usually begins with dates and sweet drinks and is followed by the meal.
Dates still remain a prominent part during Eid as it is one of the staple fruits in the Middle East. During the Ramadan period, the human body can develop various health issues such as headaches and low blood sugar levels, and dates are known to be a quick energy booster. They are rich in fiber, sugar, magnesium and potassium which will contribute to the health of the body. Many people buy dates beforehand to have it especially for this period of time as it proves to be the quickest way to fulfill the body with that extra sugar and energy after the fast is broken.
